Open House for Volunteers at the Food Share Warehouse
Susan James, CSC Gleaning and Volunteer Coordinator at Linn Benton Food Share program holds Open House for volunteers on the last Thursday of the month from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the the Linn Benton Food Share warehouse in Tangent. The next open house will be February 23rd, 6pm - 8pm. The warehouse is located at 33747 Looney Lane, Tangent 97389.“Everyone is welcome,” said Susan “It is a good chance to see if you like volunteering. We usually repackage bulk food such as rice or cereal. Sometimes we sort and box canned food.
People from all over the community work together for a couple of hours. We couldn’t do our job of providing food to people who need it without the help of hundreds of volunteers and thousands of volunteer hours.
Some of the reasons people volunteer are:
I want to teach my daughter about community service.
I think community service is important. I have time and so I thought this is how I should be spending it. Food Share is an essential program.
I find it disturbing how easy it is for a family to fall into poverty and I want to help.

Fifth Annual Newport Project Homeless Connect
This year’s Fifth Annual Newport Project Homeless Connect was hosted by the Church of the Nazarene on October 6th, 2011. The successful community events lead organizer was Elise Jordan, CSC's ‘Building Bridges’ AmeriCorps VISTA member, with the Lincoln Commission on Children and Families.Over 100 volunteers and 45 community agency partners pooled together their valuable time, energy and resources to provide 185 homeless individuals in Lincoln County many needed services. Incoming people seeking assistance were greeted with a friendly face and escorted to the intake table where volunteers helped them map out a plan for their afternoon. Event hosts escorted the service seekers throughout the event and joined them for a warm community meal, which had accompanying tunes from local musicians.
Homeless individuals who attended the Homeless Connect received services from Bike Newport who repaired bicycles and wheelchairs, volunteer dentists with their dental teams that provided over $20,000 worth of extractions and emergency dental care, and the hair cut team which provided 51 haircuts. Other services available included: free flu shots to all, resources and referrals for legal services, assistance in processing birth certificates for obtaining identification, housing and job support, onsite medical and vision screenings, as well as numerous other agencies that provided clothing, toiletries, sleeping bags, veterinary services for pets and much more.

Your staff should be commended on their commitment and great attitude in providing a valued service to your community that saves energy, increases comfort and quality of living.
We find that the staff is well organized, informed and knowledgeable.
We found no existing issues that would prohibit the CSC SERC program from being able to effectively meet the program priorities and provide information for the evaluation.
Ben Baggett is to be commended for his efforts in compiling an effective Request For Proposal(RFP.) This RFP boilerplate was used by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and US Department of Energy (USDOE) as the sample boilerplate that other states could use for their Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) PV projects.
The visit was very encouraging and we look forward to seeing the applications and also speaking with contractors at the next monitoring.
Please thank your staff for their professionalism and assistance we received. Their response time was exemplary in meeting our requests for data. If there are any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me.

Online Retirement Estimator Available in Spanish

By Alan Edwards, Social Security Public Affairs in Oregon
Social Security, which has a wealth of information in Spanish at www.segurosocial.gov, has launched its first interactive online service in Spanish: the Retirement Estimator. To publicize the website and the new Spanish-language service, Social Security has enlisted the help of the widely popular and well-respected host of Sábado Gigante, Don Francisco.
“I ask my many friends to go to www.segurosocial.gov, not only for themselves but also to help their loved ones,” said Don Francisco. “There is a lot of great information there. Estimating your benefits and learning about Social Security online in Spanish is so easy.” (Watch a short video with Don Francisco at www.segurosocial.gov/calculador.)
To learn more about the Retirement Estimator in Spanish, read our publication online at www.socialsecurity.gov/espanol/10516.html.
“The Spanish-language Retirement Estimator and the other information available on www.segurosocial.gov will help us provide a broader audience with important information they need to plan for a secure retirement,” said Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security
Getting Your Social Security Income Verification is Easy

By Alan Edwards
Social Security Public Affairs Specialist in Oregon
For many reasons, you may need written verification of your Social Security benefit amount – for an energy assistance program or for subsidized housing. Perhaps a major purchase and you need a bank loan. Or maybe you’re applying for state benefits or moving into a new apartment or home.
If you need verification of your income from Social Security, obtaining it is easy and convenient. Please go to www.socialsecurity.gov. Then look in the left column under “Top Services,” open the “Services for people currently receiving benefits” section, and select “Request a Proof of Income letter” to get a letter that verifies your Social Security benefit information.
You can use this letter for any reason that someone requires proof of your income. It is also an official document that verifies your Medicare coverage, retirement or disability status, and age.
It takes about 10 days for you to receive the proof of income letter in the mail. If you need one sooner, you’ll want to call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local Social Security office.
Get your benefit verification by visiting www.socialsecurity.gov/beve.
